Why Nigerians do not watch Nollywood Movies

Going to the Cinemas to see movies is a very common way of relaxation in Nigeria especially in cities like Lagos, Abuja, Port- Harcourt and Calabar. But then , it is sad to note that Home Made Nollywood Movies have not benefited from the influx of people at the cinemas. Who would want to have a romantic  break with your boo and choose to watch a boring, low - budgeted and over- hyped Nollywood movie when there are lots of Super- hero Hollywood Block buster ,Bollywood Love- thriller and Telemundo series to watch at home to see.

This Should be a major worry to our movie makers and so therefore ,after thorough research we have highlighted some reasons we think people do not watch Nollywood Movies. these reasons are not far - fetched. they are as follows :

1. The Story line

Not just anybody can just write a movie; it is an art. and not all stories would make a good movie. Many Nigerians are of the view that the moment you watch the first ten scenes of a Nollywood movie, you can script the ending. this shows lack of imaginative  prowess on the part of the movie writers. people want to be in caught up in suspense and want to never be able to tell what is about to happen in the next scene  of a movie. that is the beauty of story- telling.

2. Low - Budget

You spend money to  get  money. Most Nollywood movies are not properly financed. some Nollywood movies have been shot within a week just because the producers are trying to minimize budget and cut the expenses. in hollywood, some movies are put under production for years because every major part of production have been properly budgeted for.
if story lines are good it would definitely attract finance. after the success of "Figurine" Movie with a budget of 30 million, Kunle Afolayan Projected about 330 million Naira for  "October 1st". the outcome of that is visible. the movies has attracted all kinds of awards ranging from its writer, Producer, Cinematograher, Make-up artiste and all those that were involved in the production of the movie.

3. Bad Publicity

No matter how good a  movie is, for viewers to know and talk  about it more there is need to invest heavily on publicity. Movies like October 1st and fifty that went beyond the norm on publicity must have reaped the reward. Premieres were held in foreign countries to also create awareness for viewers in the diaspora. the whole world knows that "Civil War" would be released on 6th May 2016  with people  yearning for it because Marvel studios has made it that way. Omoni Oboli's Wives on strike would be released on the 8th of April and most Nigerians are not even aware. the more the publicity, the more the talkability and viewership of movies.

4. Poor Acting

That you are tall, handsome, beautiful or sexy does  not qualify you to be an actor. there are certain characters that cannot be played by certian people because they do not fit into it and they also lack that expression. in the movie "Coming to America" Eddie murphy played four different characters becuase he fit into all the four. Kemi lala Akindoju Double casted in Surul' ere and she did just very fine. its only in nollywood movies that "Patience Ozokwor must be a wicked mother and kanayo o. kanayo must act as a blood money ritualist . a good actor should also be able to take different roles in different movies.
The fact that our actors even want to fake foreign accent and not go by the original Nigerian accent is a major problem. i guess that is why the likes of Joseph Benjamin and Nse-Eitm Nkpe would always be a darling.

5. Poor Production

Production is a key to the overall success of any movie. poor continuity, poor sound mixing, wrong interpretations especially in yoruba movies, poor graphics have marred the production of Nollywood Movies. The movie " Last Flight to Abuja was perfect up that the moment when the plane was about the crash and then very poor graphics work was showcased at the moment of the plane crash. that could have been the selling point for the movie but then  the producers got it all wrong.

So what is the way forward for Nollywood Movies ?
